Potential absence

I'll be out for a week, and then for another week at the end of the month. Potentially, the internet may not function at our cabin site, or I may be too exhausted by getting up at 4:00AM every morning that I might not be commenting. However, I should be able to at least comment in the break between these two weeks, and resume regularity in August. If I vanish, that's why.

See you all soon.

comments

Weapons~

As of yet, I haven't fond anything as extensive as what I need in any of the books I've got.

So, I figured, why doesn't someone start compiling a comprehensive list for a number of different weapons?

Trouble is, I've got no idea where to start on something like this... what do you guys think?

comments

As it's been ages since I was actually on here last, I can totally understand if people don't want to start picking up month-old threads, but if there are any of my old threads that people would like to pick up and carry on, or if you just want to do a few posts of 'what probably happened', then please just prod me on here. ^^

Nice to see you all again! *waves*

comments

[semi-MOD] Hiatus notice

Posted by: in_media_res

I'll be MIA again for awhile. Shouldn't go past the 20th, and I'll try to get at least one mod-type open post up between now and then, but something happened IRL that's killed my ability to concentrate on anything else or get into character headspace. (Nothing severe happened, which is the part that disturbs me, because it shouldn't be throwing me nearly this much.) I can swing brainless stuff for a little while, but nothing that takes creativity. And I can't guarantee that it'll be dealt with before the end of the semester, which means the 20th-ish.

If something comes up between now and when I edit this post that requires mod attention, send me an e-mail or PM or leave a comment here, please? (And let me know if it's an ASAP thing or a "just so you don't overlook this when you have brains again" thing, too.) I should be able to at least keep tabs on the comms, and hopefully pin down something reasonable for an open post eventually, though; this is mainly me saying "if you see me doing modthings or non-game-related things, no guarantees that I'll also get to playerstuff around the same time like I usually do". <_<

EDIT: I'm back! Sorta. The brain-eating thing had a deadline extension, so I was working right up till, uh, now. Literally; I just sent off my last final project for the semester. :-) Gonna crash now, but hopefully I can at least get a modpost up by sometime tonight, if not get some gaming in too. Sorry about the long absence, all!

comments

[PLOT] here comes halloween.

Posted by: inanutshell_mod

Because the Halloween Masquerade is a little more elaborate than most other posts so far, I figured an OOC modpost about it could be useful. :-) Feel free to use this for any OOC-chatter related to the masquerade, including but not limited to:

- Reveals! If your character reveals their identity as part of a thread, I still ask that you go back to the normal rules of using a character-specific icon and/or noting your character's name in the subject line of your first (post-reveal) comment in a thread, but if your character never reveals their identity in-scene (or doesn't get around to it for awhile) and you want to let people know OOCly, feel free to comment here.

- Guesses! Similarly, if you want to guess a character's identity (or have a thread where people can OOCly guess), you can do it here!

- Rendezvous arrangements! Since so far the vast majority of characters are coming in anonymously, if you want to, say, ask someone if they'll put a certain character in the post for your character to tag, make sure you jump the right character who's already in play, etc, here you go. (You can also do this stuff in the other OOC coordination post, but. :-) )

- Brainstorming! Having trouble coming up with a costume your character would wear, a way to get them to the party, a non-masquerade Halloween hook for them to use, whatever? Here you go!

- Mod/GM contact! I'm not actively GMing this post in general or even the masquerade ball specifically (among other reasons, I don't want to make the time commitment), and people are free to run NPCs and arbitrate things and make up their own reasoning behind stuff if they want -- but I do have a backstory for the party beyond 'it's dressing room stuff! [handwave handwave]', so if you really want 'the GM's ruling' on stuff, or your characters are investigating the mysterious host or party accoutrements or etc and you need some guidance, or whatever, you can poke me through this post, as well as the IC Servant's thread or other OOC means.

- Anything else I'm not thinking of because it's 7AM here and I've been running on naps for the last few days! o/

comments

Introducing Kermit the Calabite

Posted by: puppet_theatre

This is a transcript from Saminga, about a character I'm thinking of bringing to the Nutshell:

Jennifer [to fade]: So... d'you think that Farce of Mistaken Identity (DH Servitor attunement, Sups2 p 68) can fool the [Band] of the Game Attunements?
arcangel has the IN part of her brain go "...!" at the suggestion, by the way. That's wicked.
Jennifer beams. "I, um, seem to have a second Lilim-impersonator growing in my brain. This one's apparently for your IT-setting. It's not his fault that his Discord is Discolored(green)!"
arcangel says, "Excellent!"
You say, "He's currently locked up in the cells beneath Notre Dame and demanding a Seraph."
arcangel laughs!
arcangel says, "I am Not a Lilim! I am a Free . . . something or other?"
You say, "Well, no. He doesn't *mind* being mistaken for a Lilim, really - though he did draw the line when some bright boy thought it'd be funny to Secretly Replace him for Staciel. Not that it wouldn't be Funny, but a Calabite's gotta think about his life expectancy."
arcangel says, "Feel free to ask nitpicky canon questions on my journal sometime, and I'll try to get to them..."
You say, "But... during Armageddon, he made a deal with a Trader who then went and got soul-killed, and blessit, Trade still owes him one! He figures if a Seraph can confirm that he's telling the Truth, then maybe he can call it in to get a few creature comforts in here..."
arcangel laughs more.
arcangel wonders if any of the guards will warn him that if he's going to do that, and Marc gets bored, he might get a Mercurian visiting...
arcangel says, "(True? False? I dunno -- but the guards might be mean and make him consider the possibility.)"
You say, "And this is a problem? He figures he's unlikely to get smited at *this* point, and Marc probably can get him nicer things than mere underlings could. Like a comfy recliner, cable TV, and female companionship."
arcangel snickers.
arcangel says, "Ah, but what if Marc brings him a treadmill instead? (Okay, _real_ Ofanim probably think of those like a real cig-addict thinks of gum... But.)"
You say, "Hey, Marc can bring whatever he wants, but if it's not something Kermit likes, he figures it won't pay off the favor. He'll at least try to argue that point. And try to figure out if the recliner (or access to) can be bartered to any of the guards and/or other prisoners when Marc isn't looking. 'Kermit',of course, because it's not easy being green."
arcangel groans.
arcangel | Marc brings a TV. Which is powered by the treadmill. Says Jean swore this was a "green" set-up.
Cally says, "That was painful. |D"
Jennifer beams. "And those reactions are exactly when he likes the name!"
Steven oohs. There's an argument. "How the heck do you expect me to redeem when you keep me confined to this cell? Huh? Imprisoning Calabim is actively encouraging us to remain demons! You've got to at least let me walk around an exercise yard!"
Jennifer | Kermit gives Marc (and the treadmill) the finger. And points out that the physical activity he's interested in involves female companionship, hint hint.
arcangel [to Steven]: Got a point there. Though any Calabite desperate enough to _make_ that argument is probably one who... should perhaps be rewarded for thinking of it.
arcangel | Marc tsks and says he'll have to research the matter further.
Jennifer | Kermit points out that really, Trade owes him more than just a crappy TV that won't even run on house current. Soul-killing other demons in the middle of Armageddon was a pretty big favor, after all. (Not mentioning the little detail that it was a Gamester, and any chance to inconvenience the Game and pin it on angels...) Now, about that female companionship...?
arcangel | Marc agrees that indeed, Trade does owe more than a TV for that. Why, it's a boon such that a much _better_ reward than mere fleshy companionship should be thought of.
Cally says, "Maybe Dominic can loan them a cherub that identifies as female. One with a whistle that summons malakim."
arcangel | Marc was thinking of one of Destiny's Elohim, actually.
arcangel | Marc was also pondering a willing Djinn. With Djinn, the other party has to do all the moving, after all, _and_ there's a chance that a fondness might arise.
arcangel | But first, Marc will leave poor Kermie with the TV and the treadmill for a while and see what happens.
Jennifer | Kermit o O (Blessit.) He eyes Marc suspiciously. So, um, how about complete freedom of the Earth, a Letter of Marque (letter of Marc?) and Reprisal, and not having to redeem? With all that, he can find his own girls.
arcangel | Marc looks horrified. Not redeem? But that would be _awful_. It wouldn't settle the debt at all.
arcangel makes a note. Letter of Marc. That has _got_ to be a Servitor Attunement.
Jennifer | Kermit sadfaces. Okay, fine, he'll stay here. In prison. With cable TV *and* a girlfriend. (Maybe one of those aerobics instructors, so *she* can use the treadmill while he watches TV.)
arcangel | Marc assures Kermit that he'll work on the female companionship matter, but he wants to make sure that any girlfriends are _compatible._ Bored Habbalah, for instance, might be a bad idea. Likewise, Malakim of Judgment wouldn't really fit the bill, most of them.
Jennifer | Kermit... is suddenly surprisingly agreeable to the delay, as long as Marc stays in touch and keeps him posted on the progress on finding a suitable female. Blessit, *archangels*.
arcangel | Marc assures Kermit that he'll be in touch. And muses to himself (sotto voce, but audible) that perhaps the (arch?)Angel of the Media would be interested in setting up a... _suitable_ internet dating page.
Jennifer | Kermit hastily adds that he wants internet, too. . o O (*Angel* of *The Media*???)
arcangel | Marc says, "Yes, yes, of course. It will probably have to be powered by the treadmill, but I'm sure that I can get something. It may take a bit to set up if you want Nybbas or one of his little minions to make the website pretty, though. The Elohim of Lightning are thorough, but often a bit... well, they don't always see the need for flash, FaceBook, et cetera."
arcangel | Marc is a _rat bastard_ sometimes, yes.
Jennifer | Kermit is *pissed* about the transparently-obvious treadmill thing, but will still have more amenities than the other demons. Score! Should be able to set up betting pools for various sports with the other prisoners, if the guards can be talked into it. Maybe even a fantasy football league...
arcangel | Marc is terribly sorry the treadmill doesn't meet with approval, but Jean _would_ balk at wiring up Notre Dame's cells with power-lines...
arcangel | Marc has also not given a time-table on all of this. The Angel of the Media _is_ a busy Mercurian, after all.
Jennifer | Kermit smiles politely and will content himself with just the TV and internet for now, with being kept posted on the other stuff. (He Has a Plan, but isn't telling Marc.)
arcangel | Marc will arrange for the TV, and see what can be done about Internet. It should be feasible to set up _something_... Though it may not access many sites to start with. >_> (And all the Usenet groups are things like alt.heaven.lightning.*)
Jennifer | Kermit points out that internet sooner than later would be a convenient way for Marc to follow through on his promise to stay in touch and keep Kermit posted. Far more convenient than dropping by in person daily.
arcangel | Marc agrees, and compliments Kermit on his perceptiveness. Still, he will have to go through Lightning channels for this, to make sure that no one comes by to reclaim their computer later.
Jennifer | Kermit cracks his knuckles and suggests that he wouldn't mind dealing with such claimants, just to liven things up?
arcangel | Marc points out that Jean has been arming his people with stunners, when in the secret parts of Notre Dame. Advises against rash behavior. Is told the hangover from being stunned is very unpleasant.
Jennifer | Kermit grumbles. Blessed *archangels*.
arcangel | Marc agrees serenely. He is indeed a blessed bastard. Nybbas has said so more than once. "Though," Marc muses, "he usually adds a 'babe' or 'darlin' in there."
arcangel | Marc . o O (C'mon, ask me. You know you want to ask me. You _know_ you want to know...)
Jennifer | Kermit *twitches* visibly. Where's the brain-bleach?
arcangel | Marc will sell brain bleach... for a _price._
arcangel | Marc solicitously inquires if anything is the matter?
Jennifer | Nothi-- wait, no. Being locked up with no women is the matter! If Marc would just give him a 'Get out of jail free' pass, all would be well. Kermit is also not asking the Archangel of Too Blessed Much Information and blessed thing. He's waiting for the internet and will then email *Nybbas* to ask what the deal is.
arcangel | Marc alasses; he does not have authority to release non-angels from the cells for anything but redemption attempts. Kermit will have to take this up with Dominic or Laurence. Marc can only provide corporeal comforts, otherwise.
OOC>> arcangel thinks that Sariel would be the one to answer Email To Nybbas, Angel of the Media.
OOC>> arcangel says "Feel free to copy and paste in the rest, if you want!"
OOC>> arcangel says "As scene setting."

comments

According to Dell, this is covered under my warranty (thank God), but I don't think they can get a tech out before Monday at the earliest. MAYBE Sunday, if I'm lucky. Dell's techs in my area are generally pretty prompt, so I think it should be resolved sometime this week, but until then, no laptop for Sariel.

I do have limited 'net access via my mother's desktop PC, but given that she needs it for her stuff, I hate her keyboard with a passion, and it's not mine, I'm really not going to be on much -- especially not enough to play, write the week's open post, or do modthings in general.

So hadesdaughter, jackofhearts, life_in_technicolor, and the host of in_media_res characters are all AWOL until further notice. So is inanutshell_mod, of course, and if I don't get a post up this weekend (which is likely), I'll either do one sometime during the week and another next weekend, or doublepost next weekend.

If moderator attention is necessary, please e-mail me at sariel.di AT gmail DOT com with a direct link to whatever the issue is; I ought to at least check my e-mail once a day, if nothing else. I might not respond if it's not urgent, because again I hate my mother's keyboard, but I'll read it.

Have fun without me for a few days! :-)

EDIT: Have I mentioned how much I love Dell tech support? Because I do. Half-hour tops and I have a working external monitor (silly me didn't realize what Fn + CRT/LCD did), a tentative diagnosis, and new parts on order plus a tech call scheduled for "no later than Wednesday, more likely Mon-Tues". This setup is still pretty wonky, so don't expect high activity from me, but I ought to be able to play a little and modpost this weekend. (Though today I'll be AWOL due to college stuff. Whee, limited hours to pick up dorm keys~)

EDIT 2: My laptop is working again! Dell tech support and the actual techs are amazing and there are definitely Ofanim of Trade involved. :D Still not sure if you're going to get a mid-week and weekend post or a weekend doublepost yet, due to schedule weirdness, but laptop working yaaaaay~

comments

[MOD] Thread requests, availability notices, and general player-chat facilitation

Are you having trouble finding somebody else to play with in the first place? Do you have way too many characters ([shiftyeyes]) and want to know if anybody's interested in tagging one of them specifically? Did a thread of yours go idle and you want to see if the other player's dropped it or just lost track of notifications? Come here!

(If you have any questions about how this is supposed to work, feel free to poke me -- but it should be pretty self-explanatory. :-) You can also make your own comm posts about thread arrangements/requests/etc, or post in your own journal and link it here, but this is here to facilitate player-chat 'cause it's easy enough for me to do.)

comments

Plotting!

Posted by: mysteriousmouse

sariel_di and I will be plotting here, but we invite the input of other players. If you have a Creationer, a Jeanite or play a Servitor of Zadkiel and you would be interested in getting your character involved in the scene, we welcome you to come plot with us.

What we are working on is getting Jeremy, Aware human, into contact with angels of Creation, and speaking with angels of Protection about how to approach the redemption of a demon with protective tendencies. We may also want to speak with Servitors of Lightning for suggestions of how to bring about the redemption of a Calabite that likes science.

As seen in threads:
Jeremy (1) (w/Melpomene)
in the very merry month of may~ (w/Melpomene)
The Vale of Dreams (1) (w/Melpomene)
The Vale of Dreams (2) (w/Melpomene)
Jeremy (2) (w/Melpomene)

Happy plotting!

comments

[MOD] re: community paid time

Posted by: inanutshell_mod

To the anonymice (or just one anonymouse?) who donated points: thank you so much. :D I woke up yesterday to the first anonymous donation of 250 ($25 USD); today, I woke up to another anonymous donation of 110 ($11 USD), totaling enough to buy a year of paid time with 10 points left over. (To whomever made the second donation: I'm willing to transfer the last 10 points to an account of your choice, since I suspect there might have been some confusion on how many points are needed to buy a year's paid time (it's $35 if you buy it flat-out and $36 if you buy in month or three-month packages, and I thought the second one was more likely). Otherwise I'll just hang onto them until/unless we need to renew the community's account. :-) Thank you!)

So! The main community is now paid until June 22nd of 2011, which should be more than enough time for us to figure out if the other paid perks are worth it and get some good use out of the tracking feature in the meantime.

If somebody could go here and let me know if they see the option to get notified when "Someone comments in in_a_nutshell, on any entry", I'd appreciate it -- just to make sure that everything's working fine. :-) (You don't have to actually select that option if you don't want to track the comm; I just need to know if it exists.)

I'm also going to repeat one question from the previous modpost: Is there anything else I can do to facilitate keeping up with the community and finding somebody to play with, in any way? I don't guarantee that I will do it, but I definitely want to hear what you think would help. Or questions/suggestions/concerns about anything, really--the more input you give me, the better I can make the comm for everybody. :-)

Thanks again to the anonymous donor/s!

comments

[MOD] Question for all members -- please respond!

Posted by: inanutshell_mod

So I've known that the setup of this comm isn't optimal for spotting new threads; other dressing rooms and journalsgames emphasize new posts a lot more, and finding new comments that aren't responses to ongoing threads isn't as easy. Implementing tags hopefully helps (please let me know if there are any issues with the tagging, by the way, and please try to remember to tag posts when you join them), but again, there's no easy way to get notified when a new tag is added, and it doesn't help if -- say -- a character enters the same post more than once.

I deal with it via DW comment notifications: I have every post pinned/tracked on in_media_res, and receive notifications in my DW Inbox whenever a new comment shows up, so I can easily see if a new thread has started that I want to respond to. (I could also have it sent to my e-mail address.) This is an option for anyone who wants to use it: free, paid, premium paid, whatever kind of account you have, you can track posts.

The problem is that free accounts can only have up to 25 tracked things at once, and that includes stuff like "e-mail me when somebody replies to one of my comments". Now, DW has a piece of code that as far as I know LJ doesn't: you can actually track a community, and receive notifications whenever any comment is made in the community.

. . . except that this is only available to accounts set as community maintainers, unless the community is paid rather than free.

As I lack a steady paycheck, I'm not willing to pay around $36 USD/year for the comm just for one feature, especially when I'm not even sure most people are interested in it. There are other paid features that could be useful to us in the future, but needing them is a long way off (raising the maximum number of tags from 1000 to 1500, f'rex); paid user accounts also gain the ability to search their own journals, which could be nice, but I don't know if a paid community means that all members can search the comm, so I'm not really counting this as extra incentive to pay yet.

So! What I am willing to do, if multiple people express interest, is to cover a month of paid time out of pocket. That's only $3 for me, and it means that anybody who's a member can start tracking the entire comm at any point during that month; I think the notification will keep working after the paid time runs out, as long as you don't turn it off manually. (Note that anybody can buy paid time for the community, if they feel the need for this feature. I'd recommend considering paid time for your own account first, but if you already have it or just really want to be able to track the whole comm, well, yeah. :-) )

Alternately, Dreamwidth allows for "shop points" to be transferred from one account to another. If you want to donate points to the community in quantities of less than $3 USD, you can transfer them to inanutshell_mod; I guarantee that any points gifted to the mod account will be used to buy paid time for the community, and if paid time is purchased for the comm, I'll include a note about it in the bi/weekly updates on the mod journal.

All that said, I want to hear from y'all. :-)
- Do you use the tracking feature to follow the community? (Or, if you didn't know about it before, do you plan to?)
- If you use it, you have a free account, and you run into the notification limit, would you be more likely to: not care and/or just not track some posts; buy paid time for your account, to reap the extras like more iconspace in addition to more notifications; or buy paid time for the community, to eliminate the hassle of tracking each post individually?
- Would you consider donating paid time and/or shop points to the community?
- Is there anything else I can do to facilitate keeping up with the community and finding somebody to play with, in any way? I don't guarantee that I will do it, but I definitely want to hear what you think would work. For instance, I already have a page on the wiki that lists all posts made to the comm; would it be valuable if, say, I included direct links to the beginning of every thread, so that people could use wikidot's notification function and just see when that page specifically gets updated? (Though I note that I don't guarantee I'll edit the page as soon as a new thread is started; on the other hand, it'd be a wiki page, so anyone could edit it.)

I'd also like to hear any other questions or comments or requests or anything you have, but I figured this in particular was worth posting about. :-)

EDIT: Holy shit, anonymous, thank you! o.o Did you really mean to donate a whole 250 points? (That's $25 USD worth, very nearly enough for a whole year of paid time.) If it was a typo and you only meant to do $2.50 worth or something, just let me know and I'll transfer the rest to whichever account you want. Otherwise, I'll give it till tomorrow or the day after, then make up any difference and buy us a year, because wow. :D Thank you so much!

comments
